Fundraising, content, programming, marketing and leadership can't get future-ready on separate tracks. I help public media and other nonprofits build one plan with shared goals, so every department moves in the same direction.
Twenty years in public media, including leading news and audience teams at KCUR and KERA. Audience Development Advisor for Greater Public.
Organizations I've worked with
Stations
National organizations
Most nonprofits fix problems where they show up. The newsroom gets a new strategy. Development gets a new CRM. Marketing gets a rebrand. Each effort makes sense alone, and each one hits the same walls: old workflows, unclear ownership, and teams that don't plan together.
Lasting change happens when the whole organization moves at once.
Where we start
A whole-organization review of how your departments work, how they work together, and what has to change so you're ready for the next funding, audience and technology shifts.
I talk with people at every level of your staff, not just leadership.
One
A clear picture
Where each department stands, and where the handoffs between them break down.
Two
Shared priorities
A short list of the changes that matter most, agreed on across teams.
Three
A roadmap
A practical plan for sequencing the work, built so your team can decide who leads each piece.
Timeline
Three months
If your team wants support with a specific piece of the roadmap, I also take on focused projects, scoped to just what you need. When a project calls for design or build work, I bring in trusted partners.
Drive planning and coaching, sustainer growth, corporate sponsorship, and donor messaging built for a changed funding environment.
New workflows, roles and products that connect editorial work to audience and revenue goals.
Designing and launching new programs from concept through staffing and launch, often with partner organizations.
Retreats and facilitated sessions that get leaders and boards to shared decisions and keep change moving.
I've worked in and alongside nearly every part of a nonprofit: development, content, programming, marketing and leadership. So I see organizations as connected systems, and I help them change as one.
I started as a public radio host and reporter. I was the first audience development lead at KCUR, where I helped build the Kansas News Service and the KC Media Collective. At KERA, I managed news and audience teams and helped lead the acquisitions of the Denton Record-Chronicle and classical station WRR. I'm also a former coach and trainer for the Poynter Institute.
Based in the Kansas City area. Working with organizations nationwide.
